What we do

Counselling HQ is a confidential counselling service for children, teenagers and their Families living on the Central Coast of NSW.

My view of the Counselling process is a journey of self-exploration by your child.

I have three main goals:

To assist your child to feel at ease.

To increase your child's level of self-understanding and self-awareness.

To guide your child to provide answers and solutions to their own questions and issues regarding themselves and their lives.

From my experience working with children and adolescents, I find them more likely to own and action an answer to a solution if it is of their own creation.

On some level of consciousness, based on your child's experience in life, I believe they are in possession of the answers to their own questions, I guide them to this conclusion.

It is my aim to help your child identify, develop, and mobilise his or her own resources to successfully solve problems and meet new challenges.

Counselling Theories

Depending on your child and the situation, I borrow perspectives and techniques from wellestablished counselling theories, such as thefollowing:

Solution-focused theory. Your child seeks outcounselling with an immediate need to alleviate some current on-going stressor.

Cognitive-behavioural theory (CBT) to help your child better understand the connection betwen how they monitor and instruct themselves and interpret events and how they feel and act.

Motivational interviewing is designed to identify your child’s resources and motivation for change.

Reality theory is largely behavioural in its approach, challenging your child to evaluate what they are doing and whether the behaviour is fulfilling their basic needs without harming themselves or others.

Existential theory is a process of searching for value and meaning in your child’s life.

Family systems theory deals with how your child and the family interacts with each other. It looks at the negative effects an individual can have on the family unit and how the family memebers can work together to support and change your child’s perception of themselves.
